Maharshi Raman was born in a small village in Tamil Nadu, called Tiruchchushi, on 30th of December, in the year 1879. This village is around 30 miles from the famous temple-town of Madurai. His father, Sundaram Ayyer, was considered a good lawyer. Maharshi Raman's childhood name was Venkatraman. He did not evince interest in his studies. For this disinterest, he was often reproached by his family. He was a healthy boy; yet one day, the fear of death overcame him. This fear forced him to search for his true self, which led to self-realization and enlightenment. The same day, he experienced detachment towards worldly life.
