 Home - Devrahaa Baba

There are spiritually accomplished ones in each age. There is no dearth of such great people in the great land of India even now. It is, however, also a fact that such great ones are often not easily accessible. Shri Devrahaa Baba was an exception to this fact. He had numerous spiritual accomplishments, unmatched spiritual knowledge gained through direct experience and extreme detachment. Yet, compelled by love for the people, he was always available to the people; he did not reside in a secluded cave in the Himalayas. Nor was his love limited by any factor; people of all religions, rich and poor, scholars and fools, all would drink from the clear, sparkling and cool waters of the brook which was his love. Even animals and birds received his love. Powers of nature, at his command, would alter their course. Thousands of devotes from India and abroad would pour in everyday to see this great saint.

Shri Devrahaa Baba's personality was amazing. His devotees included scholars, scientists, ministers, judges, people holding high posts, spiritual seekers and adepts ; none of them, however, can claim to have understood completely Devrahaa Baba's life and personality. Of his birth-date, -place and age, nobody knows. His devotees who were 70-80 years old used to say that there had been no change in Baba's physical appearance since they first saw him. Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon had said that he'd seen the unchanging appearance of Baba for fifty years. There are proofs that Baba lived to be over two hundred. Through his Yogic strength, he prevented his body from weakening. He used to stay only on the banks of great rivers; in fact, he graced the banks of almost all the major rivers of India with his presence. He performed penances in the South for a long time, and for a long time, he stayed on a boat!

Devrahaa Baba was a saint with immense powers and knowledge of the past, present and future. The astounding things done by him remain etched in the hearts of the millions of devotees. Baba never did anything to impress anybody; whatever he did to help his devotees gave the people a glimpse of his divinity. In him, knowledge and penance found a place for their tryst; his practices could be compared only with his knowledge. He had complete control over hunger, thirst and sleep and the heat, the cold or the rain did not bother him. Nobody had ever seen him read, but when he would quote the spiritual texts while speaking, even scholars would be astonished. He would resolve the hardest of the problems regarding scriptures with great ease. His compassion wasn't limited by anything, and extended to everybody who came in touch with him.

Baba's ashram was on the banks of the river Sarayu. Once, while wandering, Baba reached the banks of Sarayu in Devariya, where the farmers told him that there was soil erosion in large scale because of the flow of Saryu river, due to which their farms were getting destroyed, and their livelihood was getting adversely affected. Baba ordered the people to build his machan on the banks of the Sarayu and started staying there. From that time on, the erosion on the banks of Sarayu was stopped . Around Baba's machan (wooden platforms), there were Babul trees, which generally have thorns on them. However, these particular trees didn't have thorns. There were many creatures in the forest, and they, too, obeyed Baba. Once, in the presence of devotees, three vixens came close to Baba's machan. He simply threw some Prasad towards them. They ate it and disappeared into the forest. The devotees were really surprised, and they requested Baba to call the vixens again. A few moments later, the vixens were back, and after having received the Prasad, they disappeared into the forest once more.

In 1964, Baba went to Rishikesh. His machan (wooden platform) was set up on the banks of the Ganges, at a little distance from the settlement. After sunset, many wild elephants would come in herds and stand close to the machan, and, after some time, without causing any damage, return to the forest. Some officials and disciples were concerned, and requested Baba to shift the machan from their. Baba simply said, "Consider these elephants to have been kept here by me as pets... they too are my atma, then what is there to fear?"

The Kumbh was being held in Haridwar. The elephant of a mahant went wild. The police officials ordered that it be killed with bullets. The policeman who'd been entrusted with the job was hesitating, for he didn't want to kill an elephant on as auspicious an event as the Kumbh. So he went to Baba. Baba gave him a fruit and told him to bow to the elephant, and then give it the fruit. The policeman followed the instructions and the wild elephant ate the fruit. Then, it extended his trunk towards the pocket where the policeman's Prasad was. He protested, saying that it was his Prasad. On hearing this, the elephant became absolutely calm, and pulled its trunk back. Later, the elephant roamed around in the Kumbh procession.

In 1957, Baba was traveling in the forest with his devotees. He wanted to distribute Prasad amongst the animals. Suddenly, a tiger stood in front of Baba. The devotees were naturally scared, but Baba asked them to remain calm. The tiger moved towards Baba in an extremely peaceful manner, and on receiving blessings, went away on its own.

In the Kumbh at Prayag too, Shri Devrahaa Baba's camp was set up. Baba was inside the hut, and the devotees who wanted to see him were outside. There was a smell outside, due to which Baba's disciples didn't want him to go there. When Baba got to know this, he asked, "Which direction should the wind blow so that there is no smell?" The disciples said, "If western wind were to blow, there won't be any smell." A short while later, the western wind began to blow.

Once there was an event at Baba's ashram. The oppressive heat was causing the devotees much discomfort. Seeing this, Baba said, "The heat will end today. At night, you'll feel so cold, that you'll have to use blankets." Despite there being no indication of it, it rained hard a few hours later. There are many such instances which suggest that Baba could instruct the very forces of Nature.

There was great strength in his Prasad. People with incurable diseases have been cured by it. The famous litterateur, Indranarayan Gurtu, was suffering from a heart disease. He couldn't even speak, and had been admitted in a hospital. One of his friends went to Baba, who gave him two oranges, saying that their juice would cure his friend. This friend went to Delhi with the oranges, only to find that the doctors had given up. At around 8 pm, he gave the juice to Shri Gurtu. At around 4 o' clock, the latter got up without any support, and started to chant "Seetaram-Seetaram". After that, he was completely cured. The doctors, of course, were astonished.

Dr. Bala ji Sahay's daughter had a tumor in the liver, and the doctors were reluctant to perform a surgery, for they feared that the liver could be severely damaged in the process. The girl was in great pain. Dr. Sahay was a complete devotee of Baba. At night, everyone was asleep, except for the mother. The mother clearly saw Baba at the daughter's bedside. Baba stroked the tumor, and then disappeared. The next day, the tumor burst, and within a week, the girl was completely cured.

Chandradeep Pandey of Bihar told Baba about his uncle's cancer. Baba gave him a mango. When Mr. Pandey went to his uncle, the latter couldn't speak. The villagers had thought that his last moments had come. As soon as the juice of the mango was put into his mouth, his throat opened and he was cured.

Shri Mahaveer Prasad (Munsif, Mujaffarpur) went to Babaji's Devariya Ashram on Lar Road in 1957. He had his children with him. When was returning, a snake bit his son. The boy fell unconscious due to the poison. He was brought to Baba's machan. From the machan, Baba, looking at the boy, said, "Why did you bite him? What is the reason?" The unconscious boy replied, without getting up, "He stepped on my body." Baba said, "This is wrong. The child didn't do it on purpose. Why were you sleeping on the path?" Then he ordered, "I say, you take back your poison." Immediately after this, the boy ot up saying, "Sarkar (your highness)! I am taking my poison back. Please forgive me." A few moments later, the boy got up and, absolutely healthy, returned home.

A devotee, Gurudutt Singh, who was an SDO (a administrative post), went to Baba in the Devariya ashram. He couldn't sit straight. His condition had been such for sixteen years. No treatment helped. Baba, as soon as he understood his condition, said in a loud voice, "You haven't any disease. Whatever was there has been removed. It is my order, sit straight." Without any problem, he sat straight!!! A problem of sixteen years was cured in a moment!

Mrs. Edena Pytrica Tumlinson was greatly troubled by a spirit. She felt that the famous magician of India, PC Sarkar could help her get rid of it. So she came to India in 1965. PC Sarkar, however, had gone to Japan. Fortunately, she met Justice Prashant Bihari Mukhopadhyay, a judge at the Calcutta High Court, who was a devotee of Devrahaa Baba. He sent this lady to him with a letter. In those days, Baba was staying at the banks of the Ganges in a place called Jhoonsi (Prayag). Through a devotee, this foreigner went to Baba at 7pm. Baba listened to her problem with the help of an interpreter. Baba described her house to a certain degree of accuracy. In fact, her mother dabbled in the occult sciences, and had set this spirit after her. Baba freed the spirit from that state and gave the lady mantra initiation, so as to prevent her from getting involved in such things again.

Baba used to know just what was in his devotees' mind. One devotee, Shri Sheetalaprasad Shrivastava, had absolute faith in Baba, but his wife was a devotee of Satya Sai Baba. She told her husband, "If Devrahaa Baba would show the kind of a miracle that Satya Sai Baba does, I, too, would have faith in him." One day, the couple went to Baba. Suddenly, Baba threw a pomegranate towards Mr. Srivastava. It hit his lips, and they got swollen. Baba called him close and said, "Child, you've got hurt. Here, keep this flower in your mouth, you'll be cured immediately." As soon as he did as he was instructed, the swelling subsided.

At one point in time, Baba was staying on the banks of the Ganges at Varanasi. Some devotees wanted to cross the river and to see Baba. The boat they wished to use was  kaput. A saint came that way and advised them against using it, but the boatman proudly said, "Come on! I'll take you there in five minutes." The devotees sat in the boat. When the boat was midstream, a hailstorm commenced. The fragile boat seemed unable to withstand the violent waves of the Ganges as they lashed against it. The people on the boat prayed to Baba from the bottom of their hearts. And lo! The boat ceased to be affected by the storm, and safely reached land on its own, despite the boatman being absolutely unable to do anything. The people on the boat had no idea as to what had happened. Baba scolded the boatman, saying, "Why did you ask these devotees to board when you couldn't manage the boat?"

Baba's devotees are certain that he was all-knowing, and on being prayed to, he'd always send help in some form or the other. Millions of people have been guided by Baba, received help from him, and developed spiritually due to his grace. If one were to write about everything he ever did to help those whom he loved, a massive book would be written, and even that book won't be a complete description of the myriad ways in which Baba's love touches his devotees and disciples. His devotees think him to be not only a great soul, but a personification of the divine, ultimate reality.

Devrahaa Baba never initiated a sect. Nor did he propagate a new viewpoint. He simply tried to establish what has already been put down in the scriptures.

It is not possible to write about him in a mere essay, for not only is the space too small, but he transcends language. He is beyond all that may be expressed through ink and paper. His physical presence no longer graces the earth, and for that she weeps, but he lives on in the hearts of those who love him.
